Performances on Sat 6 and Sun 7 April, starting at 3pm.

Hope Bird are south Korea’s only pro-reunification performance group. Their inspiring revolutionary artistry was on show in Gwangju last May, at the international conference of the World Anti-imperialist Platform. Find a clip of one of their past performances here.

Hosted by the Platform, the group are currently on a tour of European cities, ending with two street performances in London.

It began life more than three decades ago in 1993 as a regional musical group coming out of the National Council of Workers’ cultural movement. After its first album resonated with many Koreans, the collective gave birth to the performing group Hope Bird.

In 1994, while preparing for its debut show, ‘Let Morning Shine’, the performers were all arrested by police under south Korea’s draconian national security act, which forbids any act of communication or expression of sympathy with north Korea.

Despite this and other repressive measures by south Korean security forces, the troupe has been active in the country’s vibrant (but little-known internationally) cultural movement for independence, democracy and reunification.

Performances on Sat 6 and Sun 7 April, starting at 3pm.
