The high court has finally set the date for Julian Assange’s next hearing. This hearing will consider whether Julian can further appeal his extradition order within the UK courts.
We are calling on as many people as possible to join the campaign to Free Julian Assange outside the Royal Courts of Justice, London. Protestors will gather from 9.00am and we plan to hold a short rally at 12.00pm.
Speakers will include:
Bob Gill, Doctors for Assange
Daniel Fooks, Artist and activist
Richard Medhurst, Journalist
Heiko Khoo, Activist
Joti Brar, CPGB-ML vice-chair
On 19 December, the high court ruled that Julian “had an arguable point of law that supreme court justices may want to consider” and announced that there would be a two-day public hearing on 20-21 February 2024.
“Lord Burnett, the Lord Chief Justice, said Mr Assange’s case had raised a legal question over the circumstances in which judges received and considered assurances from the USA about how he would be treated in prison.”
However, if the high court judges rule out a further appeal following the hearing, the extradition may be immediate. If the appeal is allowed, we can expect several more months to pass before the legal process is exhausted.
Note that Julian Assange has been confined in Belmarsh prison since April 2019 – almost five years in a maximum-security prison by the time the February hearing takes place.
